Final day of teaching and BAMPA anniversary concert

Welcome to Flog Blog - Day 7

The day started with the usual breakfast buffet although the pineapple was greatly missed. Both the musicians and non musicians headed to JTR for the final day of teaching.

On a bumpy arrival at JTR the so called 'science team' were whisked off to take part in what turned out to be a thoroughly fascinating interview with the STEM radio and teaching staff alongside a select few talented science pupils at JTR. The two groups of scientists exchanged their experiences and ideas about being a STEM student in two very different environments, ironically supervised by our very own head of English, Mr Bowen.

The musicians helped out with the non musicians in some of their classes and finally experienced the chaos of teaching younger years. Hector and Marni even planted trees, symbolising the strong connection between JTR and Wells.

After being treated to a much needed lunch of chicken, rice and veg the Wells pupils had the opportunity to sit down, rehydrate and interact with some of the teachers at the school, learning more about the curriculum and discussing their experience of the country so far.

By this point the anticipation for the much awaited football game, what can only be described as the JTR equivalent of el clasico, had reached boiling point. The Wells team, now clothed by the gifts that we were so kindly treated to by Auntie Pearl and Salone football shirts bought at the market earlier in the week, were ready. The game day atmosphere was electric as both teams made their way down to the pitch behind the fire station, pursued by excitable fans. At long last the game commenced, with what seemed to be a strong starting lineup of Oskar, Theo, Connie, Flo, Elsie and of course Mr Bowen in goal. Unfortunately the game was off to a rocky start when JTR scored within the first two minutes with their dedicated fan base storming the pitch to celebrate. But of course, the Wells team bounced back, determined to get the W and succeeding in scoring two goals. With some tactical substitutions, bringing on Chris, Adam and Marni Wells continued to dominate. The half time whistle went and after a motivating team talk from Chris Wells conceded again. However the fight wasn't over and Wells were brought back into the game by what can only be described as a wonder goal from Oskar, heading it into the post and in. The game ending in an even 4-4 score, much to some of the fans dismay.

Following the game the Wells pupils said their goodbyes to the pupils at JTR that we had got to know and love over just a short period of 5 days. Many were particularly emotional over the departure of 'Auntie Mia', a firm favourite amongst the pupils. Nevertheless the bus set off again for 'The Family Home' and a much needed swim in the pool!

The musicians and non musicians (all be it slightly late due to another mix up between 'Salone time' and the rest of the world) experienced an amazing concert at the Ballanta, with a whole range of genres and acts. There was opera, piano, strings, brass and even some very impressive dance numbers, credits to Theo and Alix leading the dance team at the Ballanta. The school song made its first debut and was a huge success! The British high commissioner made an appearance as well as the deputy ambassador of the US forming a very esteemed audience for the Ballanta and Wells musicians. This concert concluded the incredible experience the musicians have had at the ballanta for the past couple of days. We have all massively benefitted from the experience and have learnt so much from everyone involved.
The school was presented with a beautiful trophy to celebrate the long lasting friendship between Wells and Ballanta, started in 2009!
